Gas Furnace Guide

Gas furnaces remain the most common heating system in Western North Carolina. Understanding how they work and what to look for helps you get the most from your system — and know when it's time for an upgrade.

How Gas Furnaces Work

A gas furnace burns natural gas or propane in a combustion chamber. The heat exchanger transfers that heat to air, which is then blown through your ductwork by the blower motor. Combustion gases are vented outside through a flue pipe. A thermostat controls when the furnace fires and shuts off. Modern furnaces use electronic ignition (no pilot light) and have multiple safety controls.

Gas Furnace Efficiency: AFUE Ratings

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) measures how much fuel becomes usable heat. An 80% AFUE furnace converts 80 cents of every fuel dollar to heat — 20 cents goes up the flue. A 96% AFUE furnace wastes only 4 cents. Standard efficiency (80% AFUE): $2,500–$4,500 installed. High efficiency (95–98% AFUE): $4,000–$7,000 installed. The difference pays for itself in 5–7 years through energy savings. See our furnace replacement cost guide.

Gas Furnace Lifespan and Maintenance

Gas furnaces typically last 15–20 years with proper maintenance. Annual furnace tune-ups are essential for safety (carbon monoxide risk from cracked heat exchangers), efficiency, and preventing breakdowns. A cracked heat exchanger is the most serious furnace problem — it's a safety hazard and usually means the furnace needs replacement.

Gas Furnace vs. Heat Pump

Gas furnaces produce very hot air (120–140°F) for fast warm-up. Heat pumps produce gentler heat (90–100°F) but are more energy-efficient overall. In WNC, heat pumps often have lower operating costs, but a gas furnace may be preferred for rapid heating during deep cold snaps. A dual-fuel system combines both. Compare options in our heat pump vs. furnace guide.

How This Applies to Homes in Western NC

Natural gas furnaces are a popular heating choice in Hendersonville, Fletcher, and Arden where gas service is readily available. In more rural areas like Mars Hill and Marion, propane furnaces are common. WNC's mountain winters make reliable heating essential — annual maintenance prevents mid-winter breakdowns. Schedule a tune-up or get a free quote for furnace installation in Hendersonville or furnace repair in Fletcher. Call (828) 252-8544.
