Packaged HVAC Units Explained

A packaged HVAC unit combines heating and cooling into a single outdoor cabinet — no indoor air handler or furnace needed. They're common in commercial buildings but can also be a smart solution for certain residential situations.

How Packaged Units Work

Unlike split systems (separate indoor and outdoor units connected by refrigerant lines), a packaged unit houses the compressor, condenser, evaporator, and heating components in one large outdoor cabinet. Conditioned air is delivered through ductwork that connects directly to the unit. Types include: packaged air conditioner (AC + electric heat), packaged heat pump, packaged gas/electric (AC + gas furnace), and packaged dual fuel (heat pump + gas furnace).

When Packaged Units Make Sense

Homes with no indoor space for a furnace or air handler — common in slab-on-grade construction. Manufactured or mobile homes (packaged units are standard). Commercial buildings with rooftop installations. Homes where running refrigerant lines between indoor and outdoor units is impractical. Replacements where a packaged unit is already installed — switching to split can be costly.

Packaged Unit Costs

Packaged AC/heat units: $3,500–$7,000 installed. Packaged heat pumps: $5,000–$9,000 installed. Packaged dual fuel: $6,000–$11,000 installed. These are comparable to split systems at similar efficiency levels. Installation labor may be less since the unit is self-contained. See our full HVAC replacement cost guide.

Packaged vs. Split Systems

Efficiency: split systems are generally slightly more efficient because indoor components are protected from weather. Noise: packaged units can be louder since all components are outside. Space: packaged units free up indoor space. Installation: packaged units are typically faster and simpler to install. Lifespan: comparable at 12–15 years with proper maintenance. For most WNC homes with basements or crawl spaces, split systems are the standard recommendation.

How This Applies to Homes in Western NC

Packaged HVAC units work well for WNC homes with limited indoor space — common in smaller homes throughout Candler, Swannanoa, and Maggie Valley. Because all components sit in one outdoor cabinet, they're also practical for crawl-space homes on mountain lots where indoor equipment space is tight. Quality Comfort installs packaged units across Western NC. Call (828) 252-8544 for a free assessment to see if a packaged system is right for your home.
