Understanding SEER Ratings
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how efficiently an AC or heat pump cools over a typical cooling season. Higher SEER = less electricity for the same cooling output. The federal minimum is now 14 SEER in the Southeast region.
When Upgrading Makes Sense
If your system is 10+ years old and rated below 14 SEER, upgrading to a 16–18 SEER system can pay for itself within 5–8 years through energy savings alone. Add in rebates and tax credits, and the payback period is even shorter.
