When Humming Becomes a Problem

Every HVAC system produces some level of hum during normal operation — motors spin, transformers vibrate, and refrigerant flows. But when the hum gets noticeably louder, changes pitch, or occurs when the system isn't running properly, it's worth investigating. Common Causes of Loud Humming

A humming outdoor unit that won't start is the classic sign of a bad start capacitor — the compressor is trying to energize but can't get the electrical boost it needs. You may notice the unit humming for 10 to 30 seconds before tripping the breaker or shutting off on a safety limit. Indoors, a humming noise from the furnace or air handler often comes from the transformer (the small box that converts line voltage to 24 volts for the thermostat circuit) or from a blower motor with worn bearings. In ductwork, humming can result from airflow turbulence in undersized runs or at sharp turns.
