System Won't Turn On

Check the thermostat display (batteries?), circuit breaker (tripped?), furnace power switch (bumped off?), and outdoor disconnect. If all are fine and the system is completely dead, the issue is likely a control board, transformer, or wiring problem. For gas furnaces, also check whether the LED on the control board is lit — if not, the board has no power. These checks take 5 minutes and solve the problem 20% of the time.

Not Heating or Cooling Properly

The universal first step is always the air filter. A clogged filter causes both heating and cooling problems. Beyond that, heating problems (no heat, cold air) and cooling problems (warm air, poor cooling) diverge: heating issues trace to ignition, gas supply, or heat pump defrost failures; cooling issues trace to refrigerant, coil cleanliness, or compressor problems. Strange Noises, Smells, and Leaks

Noises: Banging = loose part; screeching = motor bearing; humming = capacitor; clicking = relay/control. Smells: Dusty burning (seasonal) = normal; electrical burning = turn off immediately; musty = mold; rotten egg = possible gas leak, evacuate.
