What Short Cycling Looks Like

A properly functioning furnace runs for 10–20 minute cycles, heats the house to the set temperature, and shuts off until the temperature drops. Short cycling is when the furnace starts, runs for only 2–5 minutes, shuts off, then restarts shortly after — repeating this pattern continuously. It never satisfies the thermostat. Your home stays cold, your energy bill climbs, and the constant starting and stopping puts enormous stress on the ignitor, gas valve, and blower motor.

The Overheating Safety Shutoff

The most common cause of furnace short cycling is overheating. When the heat exchanger gets too hot, a safety switch called the high-limit switch shuts the burners off to prevent damage. The most frequent trigger? A dirty air filter that restricts airflow over the heat exchanger. With reduced airflow, heat builds up inside the furnace with nowhere to go. The system shuts down, cools slightly, restarts, overheats again, and the cycle repeats. Replacing the filter solves this instantly in many cases.

Flame Sensor and Thermostat Issues

A dirty flame sensor causes a different type of short cycling: the burners light, run for a few seconds, then the system shuts down because the control board can't confirm a flame is present. This happens in rapid succession. Cleaning the flame sensor with fine steel wool or emery cloth is a simple fix. Thermostat problems — a faulty temperature sensor, loose wiring, or a thermostat placed near a heat source like a sunny window or lamp — can also cause short cycling by giving the system false temperature readings.

Oversized Furnace: The Permanent Problem

An oversized furnace heats the space so quickly that it reaches temperature before completing a proper cycle.
