Professional Heat Pump Not Heating in Asheville & Western NC

A heat pump that runs in heating mode but doesn't produce adequate warmth is a common problem during Western North Carolina winters — and the causes are different from a furnace.

What Causes a Heat Pump Not to Heat

Unlike a furnace that burns fuel, a heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air and moves it inside. The most common causes of a heat pump not heating include a stuck reversing valve that won't switch to heating mode, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen outdoor unit with a malfunctioning defrost cycle, a failed compressor, a failed outdoor fan motor, or failed auxiliary heat strips (your backup heat on the coldest days).

Quick Things You Can Check

Verify the thermostat is set to 'heat' and the set temperature is above room temperature. Check the outdoor unit — if it's encased in ice, the defrost cycle has failed. Make sure the outdoor unit fan is spinning. Check the air filter, as restricted airflow reduces efficiency. Note: heat pumps produce air at about 90-100°F, noticeably cooler than a furnace (120-140°F). This is normal. But if the air feels cool or the home can't reach the set temperature, something is wrong.

When This Becomes a Serious Problem

If the thermostat keeps switching to 'emergency heat' (also labeled 'aux heat'), the heat pump can't produce enough heat on its own. Emergency heat strips cost 2-3x more to run than the heat pump, so your electric bill will spike. If the outdoor unit is freezing up and not defrosting, ice will eventually damage the coil fins and compressor.

When to Call for Heat Pump Repair in Asheville

If the outdoor unit is iced over or the heat pump can't keep up, you need a technician. Quality Comfort provides heat pump repair in Asheville — we specialize in reversing valve, defrost, and refrigerant diagnostics for all heat pump brands.
