A Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) works on the same principle as an ERV — it exchanges stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air through a heat exchanger core that transfers energy between the two airstreams. The key difference: an HRV transfers heat only, while an ERV transfers both heat and moisture. This makes HRVs best suited for situations where humidity control is handled separately or isn't a primary concern.

When an HRV Is the Right Choice

While ERVs are generally preferred for WNC's humid climate, an HRV may be the better choice in specific situations: homes with high internal moisture generation (large families, frequent cooking, indoor pools), homes where the owner wants maximum moisture removal during summer, or commercial applications with high occupant density. In winter, an HRV can help reduce window condensation by exhausting more moisture than an ERV would.
