What Causes HVAC Squealing?

A high-pitched squeal or screech from your HVAC system is hard to ignore — and that's actually a good thing, because it's your system telling you something needs attention right now. In older belt-driven furnaces and air handlers, squealing almost always means a worn or slipping blower belt. In newer direct-drive systems (which most homes in Asheville and WNC now have), the squeal typically comes from a failing motor bearing in the blower motor, condenser fan motor, or inducer motor. Either way, the fix is straightforward when caught early.

Belt-Driven vs. Direct-Drive Systems

If your system uses a belt to connect the motor to the blower, a squeal at startup that fades is usually a belt that needs tensioning or replacing — a quick, inexpensive repair. A continuous squeal means the belt is glazed or cracked and should be replaced before it snaps, leaving you without heating or cooling. For direct-drive systems, there is no belt to replace. The squeal is coming from dry or worn bearings inside the motor itself. Some motors can be lubricated to buy time, but a motor with failing bearings will eventually need replacement.

Once the bearing seizes, the motor stops completely — and in some cases, the locked rotor can trip your breaker, overheat the winding, or damage the control board.
